From the Artist Solario:
I'm a massive lifelong baseball fan, ever a student of history and have always envisioned being able to catch a ballgame at the Termite Palace. What I wouldn't give...
While doing research for this piece, I dreamed of experiencing island ballpark life where the famous peanut lady hawked juicy boiled peanuts outside on King St. Where I could scarf hot simian and pipikaula inside. I found myself the dank under-bleachers concourse where spilled Primo and soup broth would drip down and spill on my head. I could hear the creaky stands. I could see the swarms of termites that would congregate not the lamp standards during night games then move into the press boxes to harass the reporters once the lights went out postgame. It sounded like a dump, but definitely my kind of dump.
I could see the figures, both world famous and local legends that graced the confines: Willie Mays, Wally Yonamine, Lefty O'Doul, Elvis Presley, Jesse Owens, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, Connie Mack, Jimmie Fox, Yogi Berra and Joe DiMaggio.
Varied angles of the ballpark were scarce, so I did my best to reference several photographs to composite a truly unique piece.
